COP29: Digitalisation Day kicks off
The Presidency of COP29 inaugurated the first Digitalisation Day, with the support of over 90 governments and over 1,000 representatives of the technology sector, companies and international organisations.
On 16 November 2024, during COP29 in Baku, the first Digitalisation Day was inaugurated, a day dedicated to the integration of digital technologies into climate action. During the Digitalisation Day, the Declaration on Green Digital Action was presented, which promotes the use of digital tools to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Improving resilience to climate change.
- Promoting sustainable development.
The declaration encourages collaboration across different sectors to accelerate climate-friendly digitalisation, improve energy efficiency and ensure inclusive digital access, especially in developing countries.
The day included a high-level panel discussion, with the participation of global leaders and companies such as Google, Huawei, Cisco and Nokia, to discuss the role of digital technologies in the fight against climate change.
COP29 is the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. The main objective of the conference is to strengthen global ambition in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promote a sustainable transition.
The introduction of Digitalisation Day in the thematic programming of COP29 reflects the recognition of the crucial role of digital technology in tackling climate change. This initiative aims to integrate digital solutions into global climate action, in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UNFCCC Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and other partners.
