Malpensa celebrates rock with seven music icons

At the Porta di Milano of Terminal 1, the exhibition "Rock Icons" by Sara Forte tells the story of the Who, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and U2 through large light installations

Rock enters the spaces of Milan Malpensa with "Rock Icons. Planes and airports in the legends of Rock'n'Roll", the exhibition by Sara Forte hosted at La Porta di Milano, in Terminal 1. The exhibition, promoted by SEA Aeroporti di Milano and curated by Luciano Bolzoni and Fortunato D'Amico, will remain open until 31 January 2027 with free admission.

The project focuses on seven protagonists of the history of music: The Who, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and U2. A light installation created with the Quadruslight technique is dedicated to each band, in a path that relates two phenomena capable of profoundly transforming the imagination of the second half of the twentieth century: the spread of rock'n'roll and the affirmation of commercial aviation on a global scale.

The exhibition combines large-format painting, digital language and video, adapting the artistic narrative to a space crossed every day by passengers and visitors. The goal is to take art out of traditional exhibition contexts and insert it directly into the travel experience.

Monumental works designed for the airport space

The works are made on quartz canvas, mounted on aluminum frames and illuminated from the back. Light passes through the pigments, accentuating colors and depth and contributing to the visual effect of the compositions. Even the dimensions, 200 × 300 centimeters, have been specifically designed to dialogue with the architecture of the Porta di Milano and maintain a strong presence within a large space characterized by light, half-light and movement.

Rock meets travel

The relationship between music and the airport is one of the central elements of the exhibition. International tours, travel, major concerts and distant geographies become part of an imaginary that is naturally linked to the place of transit. For those passing through Milan Malpensa (MXP), the exhibition thus offers cultural content accessible during the journey, transforming the time spent in the terminal into an opportunity to meet some of the bands that have marked the history of contemporary music

"Rock Icons. Planes and airports in the legends of Rock'n'Roll" can be visited at La Porta di Milano, Terminal 1 of Milan Malpensa Airport, until 31 January 2027, with free admission.
