Starlink debuts on Aer Lingus flights
Aer Lingus has activated Starlink on the first aircraft in its fleet, introducing free, fast and reliable Wi-Fi designed to enhance the in-flight travel experience. The operational debut took place on flight EI105 from Dublin to New York (JFK), whose passengers were the first to use the new service.
For travellers, the novelty means being able to access the in-flight internet in all classes with a connection suitable for streaming, work, browsing, online shopping and messaging, even on multiple devices. According to the company, the system allows download speeds of up to over 500 Mbps.
The first Aer Lingus aircraft equipped with Starlink is the Airbus A330 EI-EIN. After the installation of the antennas, the aircraft completed a series of tests before entering commercial service with passengers. This first aircraft represents the start of a broader implementation plan that will continue by the end of the year.
The system will be rolled out to the entire Aer Lingus fleet. The company will start with aircraft used on flights to North America, and then continue with those destined for European routes. The stated goal is to make Starlink Wi-Fi available across the entire long-haul fleet by the first quarter of 2027.
From a technical point of view, Starlink is based on a constellation of more than 10,000 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of about 550 kilometers, an infrastructure that allows low-latency connectivity and therefore smoother navigation during flight.
