Emirates brings Starlink to the A380
Emirates' Airbus A380, which has always been a symbol of the company's premium experience, takes a new step on the connectivity front with the debut of the new generation Starlink Wi-Fi. The first A380 equipped with the new system returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification completed in Newquay, UK.
For passengers, the novelty translates into a very significant leap in quality. Emirates recalls that the A380 was among the first commercial aircraft in the world to offer internet on board, but with first-generation systems that provided a total bandwidth of less than 1 Mbps. With the installation of three Starlink antennas on each A380, the company now aims to improve the connectivity available by a thousand times, offering an experience compared to a "better than home" connection, even at 12,000 meters of altitude.
The new service will be free for all passengers, in all classes, with easy access via registration. Once extended to other aircraft, it will allow you to stream content, play games, browse online and work during the flight using your personal devices. Future developments also include streaming live TV via Starlink, initially on personal devices and later on screens built into the seats.
From a technical point of view, the A380 poses a particular challenge, being the largest passenger aircraft in the world and having a double-deck configuration. Precisely for this reason, the solution developed for Emirates has been designed to respond to both the structure of the aircraft and its high passenger capacity, with a total bandwidth of more than 2 Gbps distributed in the cabin.
Compared to the Boeing 777s already equipped by the company, the A380 has additional wireless access points and a third antenna, to ensure a connection quality adequate to the highest number of passengers. The integration between the two bridges has been optimized to offer a smoother and more continuous experience, with high speeds depending on the use and capabilities of the devices.
Deployment will now continue in an accelerated manner at Emirates Engineering's facilities in Dubai, with the aim of extending the system to additional A380s throughout 2026. The company emphasizes that it wants to bring the best possible connectivity to the entire fleet in the shortest possible time. To date, 25 Boeing 777-300ERs are already equipped with Starlink, while the first A380 is entering service.
The introduction of Starlink on the A380 is part of Emirates' wider investment programme to upgrade the travel experience for flights to/from Dubai International Airport (DXB). The airline has already completely renovated 93 aircraft, with the introduction of Premium Economy cabins, an improved Business Class, new First Class suites, refreshed Economy interiors and enhanced entertainment systems with more than 6,500 channels.
